Strikeforce: Carano vs. "Cyborg" as Aug. 15 main event
Andrew Green — Mon, 06/22/2009 - 22:27
Based on the hype that surrounded female superstars Gina Carano (7-0) and Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (7-1) during their runs in the now-defunct EliteXC organization, few doubted the now-defunct organization's claims that a matchup between the two was deserving of a headline slot.
Now that both fighters are signed with Strikeforce, their new employer also agreed with the assessment and put the two at the top of an Aug. 15 event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.
Cro Cop Snubs UFC For Dream (or not?)
Andrew Green — Mon, 06/15/2009 - 09:46
Most news sources are reporting that Cro Cop has signed a 3-fight deal with Dream:
It appears Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic’s desire to make a run at the UFC heavyweight title was nothing more than a smokescreen.
Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports reported Saturday afternoon that the Croatian star signed a three-fight deal with Dream, reneging on a promise made to UFC president Dana White to finalize a contract for two more fights in the Octagon.

Site Redesign!
admin — Sun, 06/14/2009 - 15:17
InnovativeMA.ca has undergone a complete redesign!
Until now the forums have been the central piece of the site, largely acting a way to manage content outside of the forums as well. The redesign is meant to move the site away from being forum centered and more towards the content of the site. This should make the more useful information much easier to find.
Everyones username / password should still work.

“When Mirko and I talked on the phone the day he said he wanted to come back, he was all fired up, basically saying ‘I got my surgery, I’ve been training, I want this, I want to come back, I want to win that title, I want to take a run at it,’” recalled White. “I’ve been in the fight business a long time and talked to a lot of different guys at different points in their careers, and when I talked to Mirko, he was fired up and wanted to come back bad.”

Vancouver council to debate future of mixed martial arts
admin — Thu, 03/19/2009 - 09:17
Vancouver city council will debate next week whether to allow the city’s athletic commission to sanction controversial Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighting events.
A report from the Vancouver’s chief license inspector to be discussed next Thursday highlights a need for clarity as to whether the hugely popular combat sport is allowed within the city.
The Vancouver Athletic Commission (VAC) allowed five MMA events before city council in 2007 told the commission to temporarily cease sanctioning the fights.
"Based upon the violent nature of the sport and in light of the growth in its popularity resulting in more requests being received by the VAC to hold MMA Events in Vancouver, the VAC and City Staff are seeking Council’s direction as to whether MMA Events are to be within the Commission’s mandate,” reads the report.

Krzysztof (The Polish Experiment) Soszynski knows he has something to prove April 18 at Montreal's Bell Centre when he steps in the cage against former WEC light-heavyweight champion Brian (All American) Stann.
While there are seven Canadians featured at UFC 97, the Winnipeg native is the only one on the five-bout main card, alongside such big hitters as middleweight champion Anderson Silva and former light-heavyweight title-holder Chuck (The Iceman) Liddell.
Fighting words - Councillor called out on eve of MMA event
admin — Fri, 03/13/2009 - 09:39
A mixed martial arts card will be held at the Convention Centre tonight for the first time since a fighter suffered serious head injuries there last month.
Winnipeg city councillor Grant Nordman will not be in attendance.
"I was offered tickets, but I told them to donate them to the brain injury association," Nordman said. "... I hope it's an uneventful event. There will be the usual blood and guts, but I hope nobody gets badly hurt."
The councillor wants the city to look into potentially banning MMA cards at the Convention Centre. His declaration last month came after Dean Lewis of Fort McMurray, Alta., spent five days in hospital after suffering, among other injuries, a subdural hematoma, a severe concussion and a broken orbital bone during the inaugural CFC card on Feb. 6.
